How to Get a Green CSCS Labourer Card
Updated 2026-07-11
To get a green CSCS Labourer card you need two things: a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (or approved equivalent), and a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test. Once you have both, you apply to CSCS for the card itself.
All in, expect to spend roughly £100-200 depending on how you complete the qualification, and the whole process can be done in one to two weeks.
Step 1: Complete the Level 1 health and safety award
The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (Scotland: Level 4 Award) is a short course — typically completed in a day — available from accredited training providers in classroom or online formats. CSCS also accepts some approved alternative qualifications. Prices vary by provider, so shop around; online options are usually cheapest.
Step 2: Pass the CITB Operatives test
Book the Operatives HS&E test at citb.co.uk for £23.50. It's 50 questions in 45 minutes with a pass mark of 45 — see how to book your CSCS test and what's in the test.
Prepare before you book: at £23.50 per attempt, failing twice costs more than most revision resources. Practise full timed mocks until you're comfortably above the pass mark.
Step 3: Apply for the card
With both requirements in hand, apply through the My CSCS app or CSCS Online. The card costs £36. You'll need your test pass and evidence of your qualification. Once your application is approved, CSCS says cards arrive within five working days.
Remember: your first green card lasts 2 years
Since February 2025, first-issue Labourer cards are valid for two years rather than five. Renewals last five years but require evidence you're working in a labouring role. Details in how long does a CSCS card last.
