Is the CSCS Test Hard?

CITB doesn't routinely publish a pass rate for the Health, Safety and Environment test, but it has released one: in a Freedom of Information response in December 2023 it put the Managers and Professionals test's pass rate at 74% on average, which it described as in line with industry standards and the previous version of that test. That is roughly three in four candidates passing, and one in four having to book and sit the test again. Figures quoted elsewhere for the Operative and Specialist tests are estimates.

Don't confuse the pass rate with the pass mark. The pass mark is fixed and published: 45 out of 50, or 90%, for all three versions of the test. The pass rate is how many people clear that bar — and the bar is high enough that guessing your way through doesn't work.

The three most common failure causes:

• No revision: CITB publishes official revision material for the test. If you haven't worked through questions like these, you're gambling on 90%.
• Unfamiliar formats: the test isn't only standard multiple choice — CITB's own revision app includes hot spot questions, for instance. Seeing a format for the first time under exam conditions costs time and marks.
• Behavioural case studies: part of the test is scenarios about how you should behave on site. They're not knowledge questions — they test judgement, and rushing them is a classic mistake.

For most people, one to two weeks of consistent practice — 20 to 30 minutes a day — is plenty. If you're working through practice questions and consistently scoring above 90% on full timed mocks, you're ready.

If English isn't your first language, allow extra time. The test is available with voiceovers in several languages, and practising in English with explanations helps bridge the gap.
